We have good news for fans of Monkey D. Luffy – filming for season 3 is underway! The actors are working on set in Cape Town, and Netflix is already revealing new cast members, including some familiar faces.
In the past, Netflix hasn’t had much luck with live-action anime adaptations. The infamous Death Note film from 2017 was met with criticism, and Cowboy Bebop was cancelled after just one season. However, one production has bucked the trend.
One Piece, a live-action series based on a manga by Eiichirō Oda, has been a surprising success. According to Netflix’s website, the show received as many as 18.5 million views in the weekend following its premiere.
The secret of its popularity is maintaining the spirit of the original, as well as great casting, inventive scenography and excellent CGI. It’s no wonder that fans are eagerly looking forward to the show’s next season. Here is everything you need to know about One Piece S3.
What is the release date for One Piece season 3?
Netflix hasn’t yet revealed when the third season will premiere. However, we know filming kicked off in December 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa. Therefore, it’s unlikely that there will be a three-year gap between seasons again.
But with the time required for work on set, post-production and marketing, it’s safe to assume One Piece season 3 will premiere on Netflix in 2027, most likely in the second half of the year.
What is the plot of One Piece season 2?
Eiichirō Oda’s manga is one of the most extensive Japanese series – it consists of over 1,000 chapters, compiled in 106 volumes. In the show’s first season, Netflix adapted only 95 chapters, meaning that there’s still plenty of material for the showrunners to cover.
In the second season, the Straw Hat Pirates managed to defeat Baroque Works and save Drum Island, but surely this isn’t the end of the clash with the criminal organisation. In the third season, Monkey D. Luffy and his friends will arrive in Alabasta, a desert country located on Sandy Island within the Grand Line. Everything indicates that Crocodile has plans regarding the kingdom and its princess, Nefertari Vivi.

Netflix
It’s possible that in the third season we’ll learn more about the Seven Warlords of the Sea, powerful pirates authorised by the World Government. They were hinted at in seasons 1 and 2, so in the upcoming instalment, we may see them in action.
Season 2 also introduced a character named Dragon, a mysterious and powerful figure who saved Luffy from Smoker. Later, the Kings of the Grand Line call Dragon the most dangerous person in the world. We hope that in season 3, we find out who he is and what his agenda is.
We will have to wait a little longer for the official plot description for season 3 – Netflix will likely publish it in a few months.

Netflix
Who is starring in One Piece season 2?
In the third season, the following cast members will reprise their roles:
- Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy
- Mackenyu Arata as Roronoa Zoro
- Emily Rudd as Nami
- Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp
- Taz Skylar as Sanji
Several characters introduced in season 2 will also be back. Netflix confirmed that the third season will feature:
- Joe Manganiello as Mr. 0, a pirate
- Mikaela Hoover as Tony Tony Chopper, a reindeer who after eating a Devil Fruit was turned into a human hybrid
- Sendhil Ramamurthy as Nefartari Cobra, the king of Alabasta
- Charithra Chandran as Miss Wednesday aka Nefertari Vivi, Cobra’s daughter and Baroque Works’ agent
- Lera Abova as Miss All Sunday, the vice president of Baroque Works
There will also be new characters, of course.
Netflix has cast Cole Escola as Bon Clay, a member of the Baroque Works gang and a fan-favourite villain. By eating a devil fruit, he can take on the face and body of anyone he has ever touched in his life. Cole Escola is a comedian, actor, singer, and playwright, who is best known for writing and starring in the play Oh, Mary! on Broadway.
Xolo Maridueña will portray Portgas D. Ace, a son of the late Pirate King Gol D. Roger and Portgas D. Rouge, who will become a great ally of Monkey D. Luffy and Sabo. Maridueña is a Cobra Kai breakout who also starred as the titular superhero in DC’s Blue Beetle.
But that’s not all.
In season 3, Awdo Awdo will play Mr.1 AKA Daz Bonez, the highest-ranked male Officer Agent of Baroque Works. Laconic, focused and stern, he used to be a bounty hunter. Eating the Devil Fruit called Supa Supa no Mi (Dice-Dice Fruit) has given him the ability to turn parts of his body into steel blades, making him a dangerous fighting opponent.
Daisy Head will star as Miss Doublefinger aka “Poison Spider” Zala, the second-highest-ranking female Officer Agent of Baroque Works. She’s violent and dangerous – after eating Devil Fruit called Toge Toge no Mi, Miss Doublefinger can grow spikes from any part of her body, which she uses in combat.
Daisy Head is best-known from her role as Genya Safin in Shadow and Bone and for portraying Sofina in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
In season 3, Ian Stokes will join Joe Tracz as co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer of the show.
