Many people already have an air fryer at home, but there are still reasonable reasons to want to upgrade. Perhaps for more cooking space, better ease of use, or an alternative to Teflon as a cooking surface. There are dozens of options on the market right now, and many of them look more or less identical – so when something stands out, it piques your curiosity.

Set up and design

I’ll be honest: when I lifted the Typhur Dome 2 out of the box, my immediate thought was: “Right, okay… this is a monster”. A hefty piece of kit, it’s wide, low and looks more sci-fi than countertop cooker. It’s no exaggeration to say that it’s shaped like a classic UFO. And it measures 50 x 39.6 x 26.2cm and weighs around 9kg – so yes, you feel like you’re unpacking something that means business.

But this shape has a purpose. The basket is 5.3 litres, only 6cm high and the cooking surface is a ridiculous 901 cm². Instead of piling up your food – which is standard on almost all air fryers – you lay everything out in a single layer. It makes a huge difference.

French fries, which ordinarily require shaking during air fryer cooking, are ready without you lifting a finger. The air reaches everything directly. Typhur says you can fit up to 32 chicken wings in a single layer, which sounds like an exaggeration until you actually see the surface area. They fit. Easily.

Performance and features

There are two heating elements – one at the top and one at the bottom – and you can tell by the evenness of the cooking. And the temperature goes up to 232°C, which many air fryers don’t come close to. A pizza around 30cm in diameter? No problem, it gets both a crispy bottom and good browning on top. The power is 1,750W, yet it’s surprisingly quiet. It is around 59-60 dB, similar to a refrigerator humming in the background.

One thing Typhur highlights is that it has worked extensively on how the air moves in the dome. This is mainly about ensuring that the heat circulates more evenly across the entire surface, which works well when the food is in a single layer. However, there’s no information about whether users can adjust the fan speed manually, so we’ll leave it at that.

There are plenty of preset modes. A total of ten: air fry, fry, grill, roast, dry, chips, chicken wings, steak, bacon and frozen meals. Eight of them are on the panel, and there are more in the app. The app does what it’s supposed to do – notifications, remote control and temperature adjustment. That’s enough.

Cleaning and use

The self-cleaning function is something I hadn’t actually expected. The machine runs a high-temperature cycle that burns away grease and deposits inside the dome. It takes a couple of hours, but afterwards it’s mostly a matter of wiping it out. The basket also has PFAS-free non-stick ceramic, so even “normal” cleaning is easy.

The design is futuristic, almost to the point of making everything else on the counter look a bit dull. It’s definitely a piece that stands out and does its job. Quiet, stable, wide as hell and liberating to use when you don’t have to stand there shaking a basket every three minutes.

The disadvantages? It’s big and it’s expensive. You also only get one cooking zone, so if you want to cook two dishes at the same time, you’ll have to use a hob, microwave or oven. But otherwise, this is an air fryer that really lives up to its size.
